LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA Law
Student Center

In an effort to help LGBT Law Students adapt to the rigors of law school life, to positively reinforce their position within our community, and to assist them in succeeding as practicing attorneys, LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA created the Law Student Center. The LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA Law Student Center is an easily accessible portal for information, educational pursuits, and networking. The Center provides valuable information, opportunities, and activities specifically geared to the needs of LGBT students in every phase of their law school education.

If you are considering attending law school, we offer guidance, advice, and a variety of local, state, and national resources to assist you in making that all important decision. For more immediate help with deciding if law school is for you go to: LSAC – Law School Admission Council at: www.lsac.org

MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

William J. Clayton Mentorship Program

The application period to participate in the William J. Clayton Mentorship Program for 2021-2022 is open!  If you would like to participate as a mentor, please apply here.  If you would like to participate as a menteeplease apply here. Applications close on December 10, 2021, and we will have a welcome event for mentors and mentees once they are paired in the new year.

LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA mentorship program is dedicated to the memory of our longtime friend and LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA pioneer William J. Clayton. Founded in 2002, the program is designed to connect volunteer, licensed attorneys with interested students to provide directed career guidance and mentorship.

We seek LGBTQ+ attorneys in the community to serve as mentors for LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA’s law student members. Our mentors provide advice, counsel, and guidance to law students and, thereby, contribute to the development of a strong LGBTQ+ legal community. Ideally, mentors will be able to serve as an ongoing resource for any students to which they are assigned. Mentors provide invaluable advice and encouragement as their law student/mentees progress toward a career in the law.

Mentors must be members of LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA in good standing and attorneys licensed to practice law in the State of California. Judicial officers or retired attorneys who were once licensed to practice law in the State of California are also eligible to serve as mentors.

Scholarships

Attention Law Students!  Donald Snow Scholarship Applications Being Accepted Online.

LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA offers the Donald L. Snow Scholarship, which is awarded annually to deserving local law students. The Donald L. Snow Scholarship was made possible by a generous bequest from LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA member Donald Snow. For several years Mr. Snow was President of the Lambda Democratic Club in Long Beach and helped obtain direct financial assistance for people living with AIDS. Through these efforts and others, Mr. Snow served as a leader and spokesperson for LGBT rights.

Because of this gift and this continuing endowment, LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA is able to award scholarships to locally enrolled law students who demonstrate financial need and either (1) are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, or (2) have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the promotion of the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender persons.

Applicants for the Donald L. Snow Scholarship must be enrolled and in good academic standing at an accredited law school located in Los Angeles County or Orange County at the time of the application and at the time of the award.

The application for the Donald L. Snow Scholarship must be completed online by visiting:  https://applyforgrants.calfund.org/

Detailed instructions for completing the application are available here.

LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA will award the Donald L. Snow Scholarship at its annual Gala in Spring 2018.

LAW STUDENT SOCIAL AND NETWORKING EVENTS

Each year, LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA hosts two special social events specifically for LGBT law students. Both events are free to law students whether you are an LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA member or not.

  • The Annual LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA Summer Associates Reception
  • The Rand Schrader Law Student Reception in the fall

Both of these great events are enthusiastically attended by numerous LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA members and non-members and give law students ample opportunity to make contacts, forge new friendships and alliances, and become more informed about social, economic, and political matters that directly affect our community.

Law students are encouraged to become LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA members so that they have access to the full spectrum of LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA educational and social activities, advocacy campaigns and related organizations throughout Southern California.
